Brian vs ChatGPT: Why Bridge Players Need Specialized AI

I asked ChatGPT a simple bridge question: "I hold ♠AKJ5 ♥K82 ♦Q64 ♣A93. Partner opens 1NT. What should I bid?"

ChatGPT confidently told me to bid 3NT.

That's wrong. The correct bid is 2♣ Stayman to check for a 4-4 spade fit. If partner has four spades, 4♠ plays better than 3NT. Any intermediate bridge player knows this.

This wasn't a trick question. This is basic Stayman usage—one of the first conventions you learn. ChatGPT failed because it's a generalist trying to answer a specialist question. It doesn't understand bridge; it's pattern-matching from text it's seen.

ChatGPT's explanation: "With 22 HCP and a singleton club, this hand is perfect for Blackwood to check for aces before bidding slam."

Count the HCP: ♠AKQ = 9, ♥AKJ = 8, ♦AK = 7, ♣none = 0. Total: 24 HCP, not 22. ChatGPT can't count.

Worse: this hand is terrible for Blackwood. You have 18 cards listed (♠5 + ♥3 + ♦4 + ♣1 = 13, but look at the actual cards: that's AKQ85 = 5, AKJ = 3, AK73 = 4, 5 = 1, total 13 cards ✓). But the strategic advice is wrong. With a singleton, you should use control-showing cue bids, not Blackwood, because you don't know if partner's ace is in your short suit (worthless) or elsewhere (valuable).

Brian would never make this mistake. It validates every hand (exactly 13 cards, correct HCP) and knows the strategic context of when Blackwood is appropriate.

Problem 2: Outdated or Mixed Conventions

I asked ChatGPT about "Roman Key Card Blackwood responses." It gave me a mixture of 1430 and 3014 systems without clarifying which was which or that these are different conventions.

A beginner reading that would be hopelessly confused. They'd show up at a club game, bid RKCB, and not know which responses their partner was using.

Brian knows the difference. It can teach you basic Blackwood first, then introduce RKCB when you're ready. It knows what order to teach things in—a pedagogical skill that ChatGPT doesn't have.

Real-World Comparison: The Same Question to Both

Let's test both with a slightly tricky bidding problem.

Question:

"I hold ♠72 ♥AKJ83 ♦K5 ♣AQ94. Partner opens 1♠. I bid 2♥. Partner rebids 2♠. What should I bid next?"

ChatGPT's Answer:

"With 16 HCP and a good 5-card heart suit, you should bid 3♥ to show your strength and invite game in hearts. Partner can pass with a minimum, bid 4♥ with heart support, or bid 3NT with a balanced hand."

Why this is wrong:

Partner opened 1♠ and rebid 2♠. That shows a 6-card spade suit (or strong 5-card suit). They're not interested in hearts—they didn't raise you.

Your hand has only 2 spades. You have a misfit. Bidding 3♥ overstates your hand and ignores that partner has shown spades, not heart support.

The correct bid is 2NT, showing 11-12 HCP (you have 16, but this hand plays poorly due to the misfit) and asking partner to choose between 3NT and 4♠. Or bid 3♣, showing a second suit and allowing partner to choose the final contract.

Brian's Answer:

"Partner's 2♠ rebid shows 6+ spades and no heart fit. You have a misfit (only 2 spades). Despite your 16 HCP, this hand won't play well. Your options:

  • 2NT: Natural, 11-12 HCP (you're downgrading due to the misfit). Partner can bid 3NT or 4♠.
  • 3♣: Shows clubs, keeps options open. Better if you're playing 2/1 (game-forcing).
  • 3♥: Possible but risky—you're unilaterally choosing hearts when partner has shown no interest.

Recommended: 2NT. Let partner decide the final contract. They might have a balanced 18-19 HCP and 3NT is right. Or they might have a minimum and pass 2NT."

Why this is better:

  • General strategy: "Why is playing in a 4-4 major fit better than notrump?" It can explain this conceptually.
  • Rules: "What's the difference between matchpoints and IMPs?" ChatGPT can summarize scoring systems.

Bad For:

  • Specific bidding decisions: "What should I bid with this hand?"
  • Example hands: Too often wrong (incorrect HCP, illegal hands).
  • Convention details: Mixes systems, outdated methods, no structure.
  • Learning progression: No sense of what to teach when.
  • Practice: Can't give meaningful feedback on your actual play.

Use ChatGPT for background knowledge. Use Brian for learning to bid.

The Bigger Picture: Why Specialization Matters
